چکیده
Abstract Glasses quenched from relatively undegassed ocean island magmas erupted volcanoes at Iceland, Hawaii, the Canary Islands, and Erebus have elevated Fe 3+ /∑Fe ratios compared to glasses mid-ocean ridge basalts. This has been ascribed f O 2 of their mantle sources, plausibly due subducted, oxidized near-surface-derived components in sources. The basaltic Reunion Island Indian Sr–Nd-Hf-Pb-Os isotopic compositions suggesting that sources contain little or no subducted near-surface materials C/FOZO/PREMA component. To constrain component test link between OIB recycled surface-derived we measured major volatile element abundances naturally glassy, olivine-hosted melt inclusions Piton de La Fournaise volcano, Reunion. We conclude source these lavas is lower than primitive, Mt. Similar V/Sc Systematics in MORB and Arc Basalts: Implications for the Oxygen Fugacities of their Mantle Source Regions
V/Sc systematics in peridotites, mid-ocean ridge basalts and arc basalts are investigated to constrain the variation of fO2 in the asthenospheric mantle. V/Sc ratios are used here to ‘ see through’ those processes that can modify barometric fO2 determinations in mantle rocks and/or magmas: early fractional crystallization, degassing, crustal assimilation and mantle metasomatism. Melting models ...
متن کاملThe prevalence of kilometer-scale heterogeneity in the source region of MORB upper mantle
The source regions of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) are heterogeneous, consisting of chemically and lithologically distinct domains of variable size. Partial melting of such heterogeneous mantle sources gives rise to diverse isotopic compositions of MORB and abyssal peridotites. Variations in radiogenic isotope ratios in MORB are attributed to mixing of melts derived from enriched and depleted...
متن کاملConstraining the source of mantle plumes
In order to link the geochemical signature of hot spot basalts to Earth’s deep interior, it is first necessary to understand how plumes sample di↵erent regions of the mantle. Here, we investigate the relative amounts of deep and shallow mantle material that are entrained by an ascending plume and constrain its source region. The plumes are generated in a viscous syrup using an isolated heater f...
متن کاملThe Fe/Mn ratio in MORB and OIB determined by ICP-MS
Variations in the abundance of iron in the mantle may have important consequences for mantle dynamics and geochemistry. The abundance of iron in lavas derived from mantle source regions varies during partial melting and subsequent fractionation, so that source heterogeneities are not easily resolved in iron abundances alone. However, manganese is a geochemically similar element, so that the pla...
